Máriapócs
Máriapócs is one of the most famous pilgrimage place of the historical Hungary 300 years ago. The Europe wide well know settlement in the south part of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county, 280km from Budapest and 30 km from Nyíregyháza. The small town has 2200 inhabitants, good infrastructure and well accessible by car or train. The name Pócs occurred first in diplomas in 1280.The region belonged to the court and the Báthory and Rákóczi families. Máriapócs was announced with the right of holding markets and the right of boroughs in 1816, which was owned up to 1872.

Máriapócs was an im-portant religious center until 1950 but outstanding development was in the recent years and got back its municipal right in 1993.The outstanding day in the history of the small town is 18th August, 1991 when pope John Paul II. did holy liturgy in Hungarian language in front of the shrine picture. For the memory of this event the new bronze gate of the center of the was built in the pope's pilgrimage place. Máriapócs has outstanding tourism.
